Lotto Max Heading for MaxMillions

Lotto Max After no winners again last week this week’s Lotto Max Canada is now worth $40 million and with a $50 million cap on the lottery that means that no winners this week would mean that the Lotto Max is heading for MaxMillions. The cap set on the Lotto Max Canada jackpot means that if the jackpot reaches $50 million on this Friday night lottery then it must be won, the MaxMillions will be a separate draw to win the extra millions.

Now until a MaxMillions draw actually takes place it’s very difficult to know just how it’s going to work, but here are the details of the MaxMillions part of the Lotto Max Canada and what you might be playing for next week if the jackpot rolls over again and tops $50 million.

Because the Lotto Max Canada is topped at $50 million, once it reaches that amount then there will be separate MaxMillions draws for every $1 million over $50 million. So next week if for example the Lotto Max Canada has a jackpot of $50 million then there will be two draws, one main Lotto Max draw for the $50 million and one MaxMillions draw for the separate $1 million, for every $1 million over the cap there will be another $1 million MaxMillions draw, ensuring that the jackpot never tops $50 million.

Here’s an example to make it easier to understand:

  • Next week’s Lotto Max Canada has a prize pool of $53,700,000
  • Main draw capped at $50 million
  • Three MaxMillions draws of $1 million each
  • $700,000 added to the 6/7 fund + bonus ball fund of the main draw
Of course should the Lotto Max not top $50 million then there will be no MaxMillions draw, just the standard Lotto Max Canada draw.

We at WorldLottery will be keeping a very close eye on this week’s Lotto Max Canada draw to see if the world is about to see the very first MaxMillions draw, check back on our news pages next week for all the Lotto Max news as it happens.

$50-million lottery ticket bought in Manitoba

TORONTO — There is one winning ticket for the $50-million jackpot prize in Friday's Lotto Max draw - and it was sold somewhere in Manitoba.

Some lucky ticket holder in Manitoba purchased the only ticket in all of Canada to match all seven of the main numbers drawn - 2, 7, 8, 11, 16, 17 and 18 - on one line.

"All we know right now is that the ticket was purchased somewhere in Manitoba," said WCLC spokesperson Andrea Marantz. "The winner, or winners, has an entire year in which to claim the prize - but I'm hoping we hear from them much sooner than that!"

The ticket holder has one year to come forward to claim their prize, which is just $4.3-million shy of the biggest lottery prize ever awarded in Canada. That $54.3-million jackpot was won in 2005 by 17 oil and gas workers in Camrose, Alberta in a Lotto 6-49 draw.

Each share was worth $3.2-million.

$50M lotto won by Sagkeeng family

Sunday, November 8, 2009 CBC NEWS

CBC News has confirmed from relatives that Kirby Fontaine and his family are the lucky winners. Media reports identified his wife as Marie Fontaine.

Robert Mulholland, Fontaine's uncle, told CBC News his nephew and his family have gone into hiding.

Reports said the family left the First Nation community in a limousine bound for Winnipeg, about 150 kilometres south, on Friday or early Saturday.

The prize is not quite a record in Canada, but it is close to the $54.3 million awarded in 2005 on a Lotto 6/49 draw. In that jackpot, 17 Alberta oil and gas workers split the money.

There has been no official confirmation about the win from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation.

The Canadian Press

PINE FALLS, Man. — A Manitoba woman has won what is believed to be the largest lottery prize in the province's history and one of the largest ever in Canada.

The business that sold the $50-million ticket in the most recent Lotto Max draw says Marie Fontaine of Pine Falls, Mba., bought her numbers about one hour before Friday's cutoff.

Laurie Wilson, the owner of Broadlands Mall in Pine Falls, says Fontaine initially phoned the store on Saturday to check her numbers, then came down with her husband and several of her siblings to double check them.

Wilson says the family was jumping up and down, screaming, crying and laughing all at the same time after determining that Marie had captured the super jackpot.

The store owner says she was shaking as much as Marie was as they filled out the paperwork to claim the whopping big prize from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation.

The corporation has not confirmed the name of the winner, but has previously issued a statement saying that a single winning ticket was purchased in Manitoba.

$50M lottery win an emotional experience for couple from Manitoba reserve

Steve Lambert, The Canadian Press

Marie and Kirby Fontaine smile at a news conference where they picked up a $50-million cheque for picking the winning numbers in a recent Lotto Max draw in Winnipeg, Tuesday, November 10, 2009.

WINNIPEG — Only a week ago, Kirby and Marie Fontaine were battling health problems and poverty.

Those battles will be easier after winning $50 million in the Lotto Max lottery -- one of the biggest jackpots in Canadian history.

The last few days have been overwhelming for the couple, who came forward to claim their prize Tuesday and sometimes found themselves at a loss for words as they faced a row of television cameras

The Fontaines live in a mobile home on the Sagkeeng First Nation northeast of Winnipeg.

Kirby suffered a stroke last winter and could no longer work. His wife continued her job in a personal care home in nearby Pine Falls, Man., but with two children, money was tight.

"My community, everybody, prayed for me," he recalled as he fought back tears. "Ten months ago, I was..."

Overcome by emotion, he couldn't finish the sentence.

Down to his last $10, he bought a lottery ticket last week. But unbeknownst to him, his wife had bought one as well. They were stunned when they found out Marie's ticket was worth $50 million.

"Oh my God, I can't say what I was saying," Marie joked Tuesday. "But I was yelling for my husband that we'd won."

"It was 'Holy S' and 'Holy F,' you know," Kirby replied with a laugh, keeping his language clean for the cameras.

The couple beat astronomical odds. The chance of winning the jackpot was one in 28 million, lottery officials said.

The couple's most immediate plan is to get Kirby rehabilitative care to recover from his stroke. He can't use his left arm and walks with a cane.

They also want to build a dream home and travel the world, which will be a big change for two people who have never ventured further than Calgary.

But they say they will remain the same people.

"We're just regular people like everybody else," Marie said.

"We're normal. We like McDonald's, A&W, you know," Kirby said. "I still like to barbecue. I'm a one-armed man, but I have all my family support. They come and help me prep everything and I cook."

The couple haven't really celebrated yet -- they don't drink, so there have been no popping corks. Kirby is intent on finding some way to thank Marie for being by his side for 21 years.

"I love my wife. She's been with me from Day 1," he said. "I can't imagine someone going through this, but with the love and support that I've had from my wife, thick and thin, my family and her family ... it's overwhelming."."

The two never need to work again, but say they would like to volunteer and give back to their community. The drive to help others is one reason Kirby is intent on getting his health back.

"I am going to walk again, I really strongly believe that, and use my left arm."
