  3. HOW TO PLAY

    The CBC Hockey Night in Canada Fantasy Pool presented by Kia is based on the statistics from all games played during the 2008-2009 National Hockey League regular season from Saturday, October 4, 2008 to Sunday, April 12, 2009. The season will be split into 28 weeks with the final 26 weeks split into two distinct prize periods,. The first half will include weeks 3 to 16 from October 18, 2008 to January 21, 2009. The second half will include weeks 17 to 28 from January 27 to April 12, 2009. Please refer to the schedule for the dates and games for each week. The object of the Contest is to accumulate the most points in each applicable prize period throughout the regular season. The contestant with the most points in each prize period will be awarded the applicable prize, subject to verification and release requirements.

    After you register, proceed to the Enter Picks page.

    Each week, with weeks running from Saturday through Friday, your team will consist of twelve (12) players: 6 forwards, 4 defencemen and 2 goalies. Each player available to be chosen has been assigned a value from 1 to 4 based on past and predicted performance. The total value of your selections must not exceed the salary cap of 30. After selecting your 12 player roster, you will then designate one player at each position as a "star". You will earn double points for each of your three star selections. You will earn points from each player according to the scoring system described below. You are only credited with points earned by your players while they are on your roster. You will have the opportunity to re-select your team each week throughout the season. However, teams will carry over from one week to the next in the event that you do not submit new picks. Please refer to the schedule for the dates and games for each week.

    Confirm your selections using the submit button at the bottom of the page. Follow all additional instructions listed on that page, observing all posted deadlines (see DEADLINES below).

    Important: Contest Providers reserve the right to add players and/or adjust player values during the Contest based on current performance. The player value updates are tentatively scheduled to occur twice during each half of the Contest at the following intervals:

    • Week 8: November 22 - 28, 2008
    • Week 17: January 27 - 30, 2009
    • Week 23: March 7 - 13, 2009

    A notice will be posted on the Contest website in advance of any such changes or additions. It is your sole responsibility as a contestant to ensure that your roster is under or at the allowable salary cap each Week and that his or her roster complies with the Contest rules each week. If your roster does not comply with the salary cap after new player values come into effect, Contest Providers reserve the right to randomly change one or more of your players to make your team adhere to the Official Rules.

    Restrictions/Tie-breakers:

    • Only one fantasy team per person is allowed.
    • You may change the players on your team any time before the weekly deadline.
    • Any picks received after the applicable deadline will be void.
    • If you do not make any changes in any given Week your picks will carry over to the next Week. Any picks that are carried over from one week to the next will be deemed to have been made at the latest possible time, just before the deadline.
    • Your rank in the overall Contest is determined by the number of fantasy points that your team accumulates in the Contest. Your fantasy points for each player will be added together to get your team total for each week and all applicable weekly totals added together to get your team total in each half.
    • In the event of a tie for first half or second half prizes, the contestant with the most points in the final week of the applicable prize period among the tied contestants will be declared the winner.
    • In the event of a tie for a weekly prize, the contestant with the most season-to-date points in the Contest among the tied contestants will be declared the winner.
    • If a tie still exists after the above tie-breaker has been invoked, the time of entry will be used as a final tie-breaker with earlier being better. Any picks that are carried over from one week to the next will be deemed to have been made at the latest possible time, just before the deadline. In the event you have changed your picks during the pick period the last set of picks will be used for the purposes of the final tie-breaker.

  4. SCORING SYSTEM

    Points are calculated based on the following scoring system:

    Position Stat = Points

    Forwards/Defensemen Goal = 1
    Assist = 1
    Goalies Win = 2
    Overtime/Shootout Loss = 1
    Shutout = 1 point bonus
    i.e. Shutout win = 3 points in total
    "Star" Designated Players Double Points

    You will designate one forward, one defenceman and one goalie as your "three stars" for that week. You will earn double points for each of your three star selections. For example, if you select Jarome Iginla as your "star forward" and he scores 9 points during the week, you would be credited with 18 points for him. (Any other contestant who chose Iginla but did not designate him as his or her "star forward" that week would be credited with 9 points for him.) The same applies to each of your three star selections.
  5. DEADLINES

    The deadline for entering and/or changing submissions is posted on the Enter Picks page and outlined below. The time posted on the Enter Picks page is the official deadline. No submissions will be accepted after the deadline for any reason. The sole determinant of time for the purposes of the Contest will be the Contest server machine(s) as determined by Contest Providers. Contestants entering picks close to the posted deadline do so with this information in mind.

In the event of a discrepancy respecting an Unofficial Result, affected contestants must notify the Sponsors using the Feedback Form located in the Help section and found at http://hockeypool.cbc.ca/cbc/hnic08/tech_support.cgi within seven (7) days after the Unofficial Results Date. In the event of a discrepancy between statistical reviews, the final statistics as posted on the league's official website shall be considered official and final. If no discrepancies have been e-mailed within seven (7) days after the Unofficial Results Date, it will be assumed the standings are correct and the Unofficial Results will become official at that time (the "Official Results Date").

  7. INCOMPLETE AND RESCHEDULED GAMES

    In the unlikely event that any National Hockey League game is: (a) postponed, cancelled, delayed, or suspended, and therefore not completed by 7:00 a.m. on the next day immediately following the originally scheduled date for the game; or (b) considered incomplete by the National Hockey League for any reason, as at 7:00 a.m. on the next day immediately following the originally scheduled date for the game, a notice will be posted on the contest website as soon as reasonably possible, to indicate how points potentially accumulated from that game will be treated in the Scoring System.

  8. ODDS OF WINNING

    Your odds of winning are affected by the number of qualified entries received and the quality of your selections.

  9. WINNER SELECTION

    Your fantasy team will earn points, according to the scoring system outlined above, based on the performance of your fantasy team players. The points earned by your fantasy team will be used to rank you relative to the other contestants. The more total points you earn in the applicable prize period, the better your rank will be.

After reading the `How to Play Rules` it appears that you need to be a nuclear physicist to understand how to play. Most confusing rules for a contest that I`ve ever read.
